Customer story · Manufacturing

A manufacturing customer

Production forecasting for a manufacturing customer

Evaluate the operating model before connecting internal production data. The full forecasting pipeline runs end to end, built so sample sources can be swapped for operational data.

Executive summary

The situation

The customer needed to evaluate a forecasting process without supplying sensitive operational data at the outset. Planners needed explanations and evaluation, not just a model output.

What was built

A complete pipeline covers ingestion, feature engineering, training across several algorithm families, dashboards and evaluation. Sample sources can be replaced with customer operational inputs while preserving the pipeline shape.

Why it matters

Gives the team something concrete to examine before connecting internal data. Forecast drivers, model comparisons and quality evaluation support a discussion about the operating model.

The challenge

Sensitive data, uncertain value.

A forecasting workflow is difficult to assess from a model description alone. Planners need to see how inputs become features, how models are trained and how the outputs are explained. Sensitive data need not be the starting point for examining that process.

The workflow had to be visible end to end with public or sample inputs, while keeping a path to internal production data. Evaluating the operating model and evaluating forecasts on customer data are related but different tasks.

What we built

A complete pipeline, ready for real data.

The workflow runs from ingestion and feature engineering through model training across several algorithm families to planner dashboards. Explainability exposes the factors driving the forecast, while an evaluation layer examines both forecast quality and the narratives explaining it. The process is visible end to end, not represented by a model description alone.

Public or sample sources allow the team to examine that process without supplying sensitive data up front. The architecture is designed to replace those source steps with customer operational inputs while preserving the pipeline shape. That continuity supports evaluation of the operating model; customer-specific usefulness still needs to be examined with the relevant data.

How the workflow runs

Step by step.

  1. 01

    Ingest

Data sources are collected into the pipeline. Inputs are transformed into forecasting features.

  2. 02

    Train and compare

Models from several algorithm families are trained. Planners see which factors drive the forecast.

  3. 03

    Evaluate

Forecast and narrative quality are assessed.

What the business team sees

Dashboards for planners.

Dashboards bring forecasts, contributing factors, model comparisons and evaluation into one planning view. They make the workflow tangible without asking planners to judge an unexplained number. The distinction between sample inputs and internal operational inputs remains important to interpreting what they see.

How Nexus works underneath

A recognisable pipeline when the sources change.

Nexus orchestrates ingestion, feature engineering, training, explanation and evaluation. Source replacement is a deliberate boundary: changing inputs should not require recreating every downstream stage. Forecast and narrative evaluation stay in the workflow, providing a basis for questioning the approach before connecting internal production data.

Connected systems and data

  • Sample / public data sources
  • Operational data (when connected)
The pipeline shape stays the same when real data arrives.

What this changes

  • A concrete basis for evaluation. Teams can examine the operating model before sharing sensitive data.

  • More than a model output. Forecast drivers and quality evaluation are available for planning discussions.

  • A path to internal inputs. The architecture preserves the pipeline shape when sample sources are replaced.
