Security Incident Enrichment and Ticketing from Cloud Telemetry

A cloud security event is only useful if it reaches the right person with enough context to act. Enrichment and ticketing are simple steps that are easy to get wrong by hand.

Raw events are not incidents

Cloud telemetry produces events that may indicate a security issue: a configuration change, an unusual access pattern, a failed policy check. On their own they lack context: which asset, who owns it, whether it is expected.

Analysts spend much of their time gathering that context and copying it into a ticket. The ticket then becomes the record, but the enrichment that led to it is often lost.

This guide describes a Nexus pattern that starts from AWS CloudWatch events, enriches them with Rules + Code and opens ServiceNow or Jira work with the evidence attached.

Start from CloudWatch

AWS CloudWatch and AWS CloudWatch Events are listed trigger sources. A qualifying event starts a run with its payload as input. AWS SNS and SQS are also listed for estates that route security events through topics or queues.

The first step filters. Not every event warrants a ticket, and the filter rules are part of the workflow version.

  • 02SNS or SQS where events are routed that way

Enrich with Rules + Code

Enrichment gathers ownership, environment and recent change context through approved APIs with the HTTP Request node, or through a CMDB lookup where ServiceNow is used. Rules + Code scores severity and decides the destination.

A self-hosted model can summarise the context for the analyst, with its output clearly marked as a summary rather than a finding.

Duplicate events are linked to an existing ticket rather than creating new ones.

Open ServiceNow or Jira work

ServiceNow provides action groups for CMDB, Change Management, Users, Incidents and Tickets. Jira provides action groups for Users, Issues and Projects. Additional operations can use each system API through the HTTP Request node.

The ticket includes the event, the enrichment and the reason it was raised. The reference is recorded in the run so status can be followed.

Ticket creation is a routine step. Containment is not.

Keep containment behind an analyst decision

Any action beyond ticketing, such as isolating a resource or revoking a credential, pauses for a security analyst. The analyst sees the event, the enrichment and the proposed action, and decides. The decision is recorded.

This keeps automation useful without letting it take consequential action unsupervised.

How this relates to Nexus Sentinel

Nexus Sentinel is the SIEM and SOAR product for telemetry, detection, investigation and response runbooks. This article describes a narrower integration workflow on the Nexus platform. It does not describe Sentinel connector mechanics, and the two should not be confused.

Organisations that run Sentinel will usually perform detection there. The workflow here suits cases where a specific cloud event needs a governed path into ticketing.

What the record shows

For any event, the record shows the source, the filter result, the enrichment, the ticket created, any analyst decision and any action taken. Security reviews start from that record.

Nexus runs on-premises, in private or sovereign cloud, or air-gapped. Nexus provides 1,480+ pre-built actions across 43 product families. Additional operations can use APIs, protocols, databases or Rules + Code in the same governed run.

Events reach the right people with context, and consequential actions stay deliberate.

Frequently asked questions

Which AWS sources can start the run?

AWS CloudWatch and CloudWatch Events are listed trigger sources, as are SNS and SQS.

Can the run contain threats automatically?

Containment beyond ticketing pauses for an analyst decision under this pattern.

Is this the same as Nexus Sentinel?

No. Sentinel is the SIEM and SOAR product. This is a narrower platform workflow and does not describe Sentinel connector mechanics.

Which ticketing operations are prebuilt?

ServiceNow provides CMDB, Change Management, Users, Incidents and Tickets action groups. Jira provides Users, Issues and Projects action groups. Additional operations use each system API through HTTP Request.
